Topic 1: What the Client Wants…Customer service! How to better service, the client, the session- from start to finish.
Informal on going lecture:
Identify who the client is ortho muscular concerns
Know the goal of the client, based on present report of findings
Know the daily emotional profile questionnaire (EPQ)
Know the daily physical profile questionnaire (PPQ)
Learning objectives:
- With the aid of references and in accordance with the current trends in personal training identify the target clientele market for personal training
- Given a client in a personal training setting, with the use of PARQ, health history questionnaires, and a verbal interview, develop an understanding of who the client is.
- Given a client in a personal training setting, with the information gathered during from the PARQ, health history questionnaires and verbal interview identify the client’s goals.
- Given a client in a personal training setting and during the clients warm up, utilize the EPQ to determine their emotional state prior to the work out.
- Given a client in a personal training setting and during the clients warm up utilize the PPQ to identify their physical activities throughout the day, prior to the workout.
- Given a client in a personal training setting, adjust the days training plan to accommodate the information gathered from the PPQ
Topic 2: Where does all movement start from…The Spine? A precision look at our rigid but mobile rod.
Informal Lecture:
Know how to explain the curves of the spine
Know how to explain the spines role in basic exercise movement patterns
Practical Application:
Be able to identify a client’s optimal neutral spine during exercise
Be able to identify kyphotic curves in a clients’ posture
Be able to identify the lordotic curves in a clients’ posture
Learning objectives:
- Given a client in a personal training setting, without the aid of reference identify the curves of the clients’ spine.
- Given a client in a personal training setting establish an optimal neutral posture while standing, sitting, kneeling, supine, and prone, on stable and unstable platforms.
- Given a client, in a personal training setting, coach the client to maintain optimal neutral posture while performing exercises.
Topic 3: The TVA our sleepy muscle and how we can progressively wake it up.
Informal Lecture:
Know how to explain the role of the transverse abdominis
Know how to explain the purpose of the four point stance
Know what core is not
Practical Application:
Be able to coach a client into a four point stance
Be able to locate the TVA on a client while in a four point stance
Learning objectives:
- Given a client in a personal training setting, without the aid of reference explain and demonstrate a four point stance.
- Given a client in a personal training setting, without the aid of reference explain the drawing in maneuver to activate the transverse abdominis.
- Given a client in a personal training setting, without the aid of reference utilizing palpation techniques identify the activation of the transverse abdominis.
- Given a client in a personal training setting and without the aid of reference; coach the client through the four point stance progressions.
Topic 4: Ideal loading to place regional emphasis on the working muscles to achieve client goals. Are we isolating the muscles or joints? “Back”, “Legs”, “Chest”, “Shoulders”, “Arms”, “Core”, “Abdominals”.
Informal Lecture:
Know what tools to select in a personal training environment; Free Motion machine, Rubber Tubing, dumbbells, medicine balls, Body Bar, and cable pulley machines.
Know how to identify proper load lines and opposition for basic exercises using tools found in a personal training environment.
Know how to maintain opposition with the appropriate tool through the duration of exercises
Practical Application:
Be able to instruct a client in the execution of exercises
Be able to select the appropriate tool for the execution of exercises.
Be able to establish load lines for basic exercise.
Be able to determine regressions for orthopedic and muscular-skeletal concerns
Be able to progress based on visual assessment

- Given a client in a personal training setting establish an optimal neutral posture while standing, sitting, kneeling, supine, and prone, on stable and unstable platforms while performing: Chest, back, shoulders, legs, arms, abdominals and core exercises
